Topic: In this week’s discussion, we will be examining a few of the historical figures that contributed to the early field of microbiology and how they used the scientific method in their work.
Choose one scientist from the list below,
Include the name of your chosen person in the title/subject line of your post.
Here are the scientists you can choose from:
• Robert Hooke
• Antonie van Leeuwenhoek
• Edward Jenner
• Francisco Redi
• John Needham and Lazzaro Spallanzani (these go together)
• Robert Koch
• Joseph Lister
• Alexander Fleming
• Ignaz Semmelweis
• Louis Pasteur
Provide the following in your response:
• Use and cite at least 1 of the course learning resources to briefly describe the chosen person’s contribution to the field of microbiology, including the year (or decade) they did their most important work. Include an in-text citation.
• Do a web search to find a video or article about this person or their discoveries and briefly describe the most interesting thing you learned from this source. Include an in-text citation.
• Now describe their most important experiment/discovery/invention that contributed to microbiology in a bit more detail. Pick only 1 to discuss – if a person has several large contributions focus only on one (that focuses specifically on microbiology and not another field of study). When describing their experiment/discovery/invention use what you have learned about the scientific method trying your best to answer the following questions.
o Which observations did they (likely) make that resulted in their experiment/discovery/ invention?
o State a possible hypothesis for their experiment.
o Did they have a control and experimental group? If so, what were they?
o If any, what were the independent and dependent variables in this experiment?
o How did they share their discovery with the scientific community?
For some of these people, it may be challenging to identify each step of the scientific method but do your best to apply what you have learned about the scientific method/scientific process when describing their contributions.
At the end of your post include references in APA format to all sources used. Most of the information should come from the learning materials for week 1 (history of microbiology video, scientific method video, scientific method tutorial, chapter readings and course Module 1).
