Key Assessment for NAEYC STANDARD 1
Description: Writing competency statements enables Early Childhood professionals to illustrate understanding of fundamental skills necessary to create high quality care and education for infants and toddlers.
Directions: You will choose either the FCCPC or the National CDA.
• For the Florida Childcare Professional Credential (FCCPC) write a competency statement for:
Competency Goal 2: Creation of developmentally appropriate learning environment that is safe, healthy, respectful, challenging and supportive of children and families. (S1b)
• For the National Child Development Associate (CDA) credential, you will address Competency
Goal I: To Establish and Maintain a Safe, Healthy Learning Environment. (S1b)
• Your goal must include three functional areas:
❖ Functional Area 1: Candidate provides a safe environment to prevent and reduce injuries.
❖ Functional Area 2: Candidate promotes good health and nutrition and provides an environment that contributes to the prevention of illness.
❖ Functional Area 3: Candidate uses space, relationships, materials, and routines as resources for constructing an interesting, secure, and enjoyable environment that encourages play, exploration, and learning.
• For each functional area, write one page addressing how you meet the needs of young infants, mobile infants and toddlers. Connect this to the classroom environment in which you are teaching or observing.
• The statement should be no less than 500 words in length and address each area of an appropriate learning environment (safe, healthy, respectful, challenging, and supportive of children and families.)
❖ Introduce the importance of creating a safe, healthy, respectful, challenging, and supportive environment. (S1a)
❖ Describe the multiple influences on development and learning that come from the environment. (S1b)
❖ Describe activities you implement to create a healthy, respectful, challenging, and
supportive environment for young infants, mobile infants, and toddlers. (S1c)
• This statement should be typed and carefully proofread for clarity, correct grammar, spelling and punctuation
