1. Exposure and response prevention is a type of cognitive-behavioral therapy that is effective for treating illness anxiety disorder and is known as health anxiety. The main components are exposure and response prevention. The combination of these components helps the client learn that their anxiety will decrease over time without engaging in the compulsive behaviors. The text lists these components as part of Exposure and Response Prevention; “development of a fear hierarchy, exposure and response prevention beginning with the least anxiety provoking items from the fear list, imaginal exposure (imagining that one has an illness) can also be used, bibliotherapy using CBT principles may be helpful” (Reichenberg & Seligman, 2016, p. 297). The goal of this is to address the fear through therapy.
2. Rumination disorder is a condition where an individual repeatedly regurgitates food which is re-chewed, re-swallowed, or spit out. This behavior is not due to a medical condition but rather a psychological one. During regurgitation, previously swallowed food will be brought up into the mouth with no apparent disgust, involuntary retching, or nausea (American Psychiatric Association, 2022). Social workers must understand this disorder to apply the appropriate interventions and support systems.
3. Encopresis is a condition characterized by the repeated passing of stool into inappropriate places, such as clothing or the floor, by a child who is past the age of toilet training. The textbook states, “encopresis can contribute to family distress, resistance on the part of the child, embarrassment at school, and a decline in school performance (Reichenberg & Seligman, 2016, p. 342). The typical client characteristics of Encopresis include child who is facing symptoms of anxiety, depression, and/or emotional and behavioral problems (Reichenberg & Seligman, 2016, p. 343). Encopresis can contribute to family distress, resistance on the part of the child, embarrassment at school and a decline in school performance (Reichenberg & Seligman, 2016, p. 342). Some typical characteristics to consider are age, gender, behavioral signs, emotional and social impact, and family dynamics.

Emma,
I thoroughly enjoyed reading your discussion. According to (APA, 2022) The disorder may be diagnosed across the life span, particularly in individuals who also intellectual developmental disorder. Many individuals with rumination disorder can be directly observed engaging in the behavior by the clinician. (APA, 2022).

Good afternoon Emma, great work! It is important to understand what Exposure and Response Prevention is in order to understand why it is an important tool in assessments and treatment plans. The components of ERP are important in aiding individuals to better cope with or remove extreme responses to certain fears or anxieties. Understanding the severity of the symptoms or diagnostic criteria of Illness Anxiety Disorder is an important factor in what form of ERP is necessary or will be more efficient. As I stated in my post, one of the common forms of ERP includes imaginal exposure. Imaginal exposure is when a client is told to imagine that they are sick to teach them how to sit with their anxiety from being “sick”, and not perform a response to the anxiety. (Reichenberg & Seligman, 2016). That was a very interesting factor I hadn’t known about before this lesson. I had heard of Rumination Disorder before from a friend of mine who is a nurse. It was interesting to both of us to understand that it was not a medical condition, but a psychological condition. The connection between the brain and the body is always so intriguing, it is crazy to see all the different ways the brain can make the body react. Now I will say that I had heard of Encopresis before this course, but not the proper name for it. It is extremely understandable that this disorder can cause extreme anxiety and depression because the symptoms of this disorder can isolate an individual at times. (American Psychiatric Association, 2022). Individuals that suffer from this disorder tend to face embarrassment, and disappointment from parents or peers, and this can lead to a decline in social confidence or self-esteem. It is saddening how something you have no control over can have so much control over your life. You did a great job providing detailed and descriptive information for this post!

Hello Emma,
I enjoyed reading and reviewing your discussion post for this week. You did good work explaining the components of Exposure and Response Prevention for illness anxiety disorder. According to Reichenberg & Seligman (2016), the components of Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) for illness anxiety disorder include the development of a fear hierarchy, exposure, and response prevention beginning with the least anxiety-provoking items from the fear list, imaginal exposure, and bibliotherapy using Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (p. 297). You made a valid point, I believe that using CBT principles may be helpful in treating exposure and response prevention for illness anxiety disorder. When it comes to Encopresis you did a good job defining it. Encopresis can contribute to family distress, resistance on the part of the child, embarrassment at school, and a decline in school performance (Reichenberg & Seligman, 2016, p. 342). Overall, good work on your discussion post, and thank you for sharing.
