Throughout US history, Presidents have taken actions to address critical problems facing the country. These actions have met with varying degrees of success.
Select two Presidents who took actions to address a critical problem faced by the nation and for each. Describe the historical circumstances that led to the problem. Explain an action taken by the President to address the problem. Discuss the extent to which this action resolved the problem. You may use any President who took an action to solve a critical problem facing the nation from your study of United States history. Some suggestions you might wish to consider include: George Washington: Whiskey Rebellion, John Adams: Quasi War, James Madison: War of 1812, Andrew Jackson: nullification crisis, Abraham Lincoln: secession of Southern states
Actions taken by the US government have often been influenced by geographic factors. Some of these factors include location, climate, natural resources, and physical features. Identify two actions taken by the US government that have been influenced by geographic factors and for each. State one reason the government took the action. Describe how a geographic factor influenced the action. Discuss the impact of the action on the United States. You may use any action taken by the United States government that was influenced by a geographic factor. Some suggestions are the Lewis and Clark expedition (1804–1806), the Monroe Doctrine (1823), the Indian Removal Act and Trail of Tears, Mexican War (1846–1848), building of transcontinental railroad (1860s).
Many students do not see the value in studying people and events from centuries ago. They are of the opinion that the past has little relevance in today’s world. After having survived a semester of US History I, do you agree or disagree with this view? (Be honest!) Point to specific examples from our course that support your view should you in fact believe that the subject matter we studied is important to understanding today’s world. On the other hand, should you doubt the relevancy of the course’s subject matter, then please explain why you believe this to be so by providing illustrative examples of specific evidence that support your belief.
