One developmental milestone in infancy is the development of stranger anxiety, which typically occurs around 8-12 months of age (Gesell & Ilg, 2021). Stranger anxiety is the fear of unfamiliar people and is a normal part of social and emotional development.
Missing the development of stranger anxiety may indicate a delay in social-emotional development and may lead to difficulties with attachment and social interactions. For example, a child who does not show stranger anxiety may be more prone to separation anxiety and may have difficulty forming close relationships with others (Gesell & Ilg, 2021).
On the other hand, meeting this milestone may indicate that the child is developing normally in terms of social-emotional development and is able to form attachment and social relationships appropriately.
