While you may choose your own movie, if you would rather pick from a list, here are a few suggestions. This list is organized by streaming services. It’s not a recommendation of “good” movies. Just the first 5 the popped up on each streaming services that made me think “I’ve seen that, and it has all three concepts” (PS, some of them I haven’t technically seen, but I’ve read, and I’m working under the assumption the movie wasn’t changed too dramatically)
Netflix: Boxtrolls, The Matrix, Ender’s Game, The Nutty Professor, Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark
Disney Plus: Wish, Aladdin (live action), Around the World in 80 days, Kazam, Pocahontas
Prime Video: The Stepford Wives, Memoirs of a Geisha, Fried Green Tomatoes, Catwoman, Till
HBO Max: Barbie, Deadpool, Crazy Rich Asians, Fahrenheit 451, The Color Purple
Kanopy: Fiddler on the Roof, Westside Story, Maid in Manhattan, The Librarians, Hot Tub Time MachineFor this movie analysis, you are able to chose any movie you would like to analyze. The movie does not need to be about gender, race, and/or class; but all three themes should be present. You will be using theory and sociological imagination to analyze the movie and write your findings in a paper. The movie must be available on the following services: Netflix, Disney, Hulu, HBO Max, Amazon Prime, or Kanopy.
This paper should use APA format, and be 5-8 pages long. This not include title page or the Reference page. You will need to cite at least 5 sources through this paper. Sources can come from the readings we have done in class, the articles provided in the “Gender, race, and class in the media” module, or can be from your research. If you do your own research, be sure that you are using reliable sources. (If you need help with finding research, I hear the Librarian is available for any of your reference needs.)
The paper should include the following content:
Introduction: include a summary of the movie.
Theoretical framework: discuss which theory you will use as a framework for this analyses. Choose from any of the main three: structural functionalism, symbolic interactionism, or conflict theory. You you may use any additional theories mentioned in our readings (feminism, critical race theory, Marxism, etc.). While this is the section where you introduce your theoretical framework, it should be present throughout your analysis.
Gender: Using the theoretical framework of your choice, analyze the film for its’ portrayal of gender.
Race: Using the theoretical framework of your choice, analyze the film for its’ portrayal of race.
Class: Using the theoretical framework of your choice, analyze the film for its’ portrayal of class.
Intersectionality: Discuss the ways the three above themes intersect in the film.
Conclusion: Briefly summarize your findings. Additionally, answer the question: how has this experience changed the way you view the film.
