Q1. As a constituent and innovator, what type of representation is most important for you to see in your senator or congressperson? Why?
As a constituent, I would like my congressperson or senator to exhibit a trustee model of representation. With the trustee representation model, the congressperson or the senator is allowed to act on behalf of the constituents (Verstein, 2012). The leaders represent the views of the constituents and behave in the best way for them. When the leaders vote in Congress, they represent the views of the constituents. The trustee model of representation symbolizes democracy (Verstein, 2012). The constituents are allowed to elect their leaders or a trustee for their constituency. The leader is given the mandate to act or deliberate as they see fit. When the leader realizes that some policies or bills presented in parliament do not represent the views of their constituents, they are allowed to oppose or recommend ideas that resonate with the people they represent. Thus, the trustee representation model acts in the best interest of the people.
A trustee representative should serve the interest of the public. The leader is elected by the constituent to represent them in parliament, where policies are formulated and implemented. The congressperson or the senator is charged with evaluating the laws or policies being formulated and acting in the best interest of the public (Verstein, 2012). The judgment of the leaders represents the views of the constituents when they sit in Congress or Parliament. However, when the leader does not represent the explicit desires of the constituents, it is considered an act of betrayal to the public (Verstein, 2012). Ideally, the trustee representation model involves advocating for the desires, beliefs, or wishes of the constituents in parliament. The leader is not allowed to use their individual views in their representation roles in Congress or Parliament.
