OAs a nurse leadership role, I am familiar with the role of the nurse manager. In this role, the nurse educator plays a crucial role in collaborating with leadership in an institution. In a hospital setting, for example, the nurse manager is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of a unit, while the nurse educator is responsible for providing education and training to the nursing staff.
One way that the nurse educator collaborates with leadership in this setting is through the development and implementation of continuing education programs. The nurse manager may identify areas where the nursing staff need additional education and training, and the nurse educator can work with leadership to design and deliver these programs. This collaboration helps to ensure that the nursing staff have the knowledge and skills they need to provide high-quality patient care.
Another way that the nurse educator collaborates with leadership is through the development of policies and procedures. The nurse manager may identify areas where changes in policy or procedure are needed to improve patient care or streamline operations. The nurse educator can work with leadership to research best practices and develop policies and procedures that reflect these practices.
NLN’s Nurse Educator Competency 8, “Leadership Skills,” is particularly relevant to the nurse educator’s role in collaborating with leadership in an institution. In this competency, the NLN describes the importance of being able to “identify opportunities for change and innovation in the practice setting” and “collaborate with others to plan and implement effective change” (NLN, 2016). As a nurse educator, I see leadership skills as integral to my role in shaping and implementing effective change within an institution. By working with leadership to identify areas where change is needed and collaborating with others to plan and implement change, I can help to improve patient care and the overall functioning of the organization.
