As a registered nurse with a focus on adult gerontology, I work in a variety of healthcare environments, such as community health centers, acute care, ambulatory care (emergency room), outpatient care, and hospitals. Keeping up with the most recent developments and evidence-based methods is essential to providing aging persons with the best care possible in this dynamic environment. According to Owusu et al (2023), nurses worldwide are required by the International Council of Nurses’ 2021 code of ethics to offer patients with evidence-based healthcare. This necessitates the practical application of research. As a result, the World Health Organization claims that applying research evidence has improved nursing practice throughout the world. Evidence-based practice (EBP), which includes using research evidence, is an excellent way for nurses to address the evolving health demands of society.
I have actively participated in nursing research throughout my career to improve my clinical practice. The establishment of a fall prevention program in the emergency room was one noteworthy experience. I was part of the process improvement team at one of my former positions. I used similar methods while at my clinical practice to help our elderly patients at our facility, at home, and while doing their daily activities. Upon realizing how common falls are among senior citizens, I looked for studies that concentrated on evidence-based treatment strategies. I was able to identify best practices that have been shown to lower the risk of falls in older people. These practices included medication reviews, environmental adjustments, and best practice programs. The physician I worked with allowed me to educate the patients about fall prevention when conducting interviews during their visits.
Another area in which my work was greatly impacted by nursing research was the treatment of chronic illnesses in the elderly, such as diabetes mellitus. I kept up with the most recent studies on the best ways to control diabetes in the elderly population by reading through the literature regularly and attending team meetings with the staff. With this information in hand, we practiced care regimens that gave glycemic control priority while taking into account the special requirements and difficulties that older persons confront, like polypharmacy and cognitive decline.
Patient outcomes have significantly improved as a result of my clinical practice’s use of nursing research. I have seen gains in several care areas, including medication adherence, symptom management, and overall quality of life for older persons, by following evidence-based guidelines and treatments (Casey, 2022). In the case of diabetes management, for example, patients reported improved glucose control, a lower risk of complications, and a higher level of satisfaction with their treatment. In a similar vein, patients in the clinic had greater mobility and fewer fall-related injuries as a result of the application of fall prevention techniques given to them to use at home. Therefore, the use of research is very important in any healthcare setting.
