In this assessment, students will select a text and argue the case for why it should be considered ‘a contemporary classic’. The year in which the text was created/produced must be from 2000 onwards. Students will need to develop their own definition for what constitutes a ‘classic text’ (with reference to existing scholarship), and demonstrate their understanding of the significance of the chosen text within a genre and specific socio-historical context. Remember: as stated numerous times in lectures and other unit materials, you should not be using words like: timeless, universal, transcends, etc. Any definition that uses these concepts shows a lack of criticality and shows they have not been learning for the unit materials, and as such will lose marks if these words are used. The text cannot be one that has been covered/studied in the unit readings, lectures or online activities, and must be a different genre from the adaptation in Assessment 2: Presentation. Students are to demonstrate appropriate research that includes, but also extends beyond, the required readings in the unit (minimum of 5 scholarly sources; at least 1 of which must be from the required reading list). When we The text cannot be one that has been covered/studied in the unit readings, lectures or online activities, and must be a different genre from the adaptation in Assessment 2: Presentation. Students are to demonstrate appropriate research that includes, but also extends beyond, the required readings in the unit (minimum of 5 scholarly sources; at least 1 of which must be from the required reading list). When we say minimum, remember that this means in order to be considered able to pass…so what this is telling you is that in order to do well in this assessment, you need more than 5 sources to have the depth of research needed for anything more than a pass. Essays that rely predominantly on internet sources, or that the tutor deems insufficient in terms of scholarly research, may receive a Fail grade for the assessment. The assessment must demonstrate understanding of the unit’s key ideas and concepts. You will be assessed on the following criteria: • engagement with the task (fulfills assessment brief) • use of resources • quality of argument and critical analysis • academic writing (includes referencing) A Works Cited List must be included at the end of the Essay.
