You will be required to write up the results in an APA-style paper
presentation with a short literature review, hypothesis, methods, results, and discussion sections.
First, you’ll get some foundational knowledge from the class, and then we will spend time shaping your
idea for a project
Next, you will need to complete this sentence with some kind of interval or ratio scale measurable
variable: “I think that my ___________ might be related to my performance as a counselor-in-
training”—remember think MEASURABLE USING NUMBERS. Come up with a few options we can discuss
together in class. Performance can be defined any way you like (clinically, as a student, as a supervisee,
as a budding researcher, as a student in this class!). I will be providing you with a measure of
“performance as a counselor” that can be adjusted for how you define yourself as a “counselor-in-
training.”
Then, consider how you can quantify your chosen variable (which is to be your independent variable for
the study)! Think: “I can measure my __________ by counting/tallying/rating ______________.” You
might simply count the number of times something occurs, or use a Likert-type scale to rate something
you do. You might find a measure in the literature, or you may choose to measure something on your
own. Again, remember that this needs to be MEASURABLE USING NUMBERS.
Finally, you need a plan to collect data over the next few weeks such that you have at least 20
(preferably 30) observations of your independent variable. You must have all of your data collection
completed by the week of 5/4, so that you have time to create your data file. You will create a “survey”
for yourself to take, which will include your measure of your IV and the measure for the DV. All of this
information will be stored in a database that you can then download and transform into an SPSS/Jamovi
file ready for analysis
